Catalogue Note
A very fine figure, probably Bosman people, Lower Ramu, Madang Province, Hansa Bay, Papua New Guinea
Amongst the innumerable kandimboang figures with which it shares its features, the offered figure is distinguished by its size, sculptural power, and quality.
In addition to the features common to this type of sculpture (the upright figure stood on a hemispherical base, the heart-shaped face lengthened by a proboscis which connects with the navel, and a dome shaped head which evokes the traditional braided hairstyle worn by men on ceremonial occasions), the offered example adds a remarkable sculptural power all of its own. The angular volumes and tilted planes highlight the figure's downward gaze, whilst the exceptional volume and taut curves of the head are accentuated by the depth and density of the motifs carved into the head-dress.
The sense of power conveyed through its size and its rich decoration suggest that this figure represents an important person. Both the provenance and patina indicate that it dates to the 19th century.
Cf. Kelm (1968: 90, no. 92) for a kandimboang figure collects ed in 1914 and now in the Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin which is of comparable size to the offered figure, although not quite of the same sculptural quality or power.
