Catalogue Note

cf. Hooper (1997, vol. II : 50, fig.

A rare sacred flute ornament, Sawos or Iatmul, Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea

cf. Hooper (1997, vol. II: 50, fig. 32) for a comparable flute ornament from the collects ion of Pierre Loeb, now in the Sainsbury collects ion at the University of East Anglia. According to Hooper (ibid.), flute ornaments were considered to be highly important objects, used during the initiation of young people. The offered ornament displays a superb play of line, the powerful vertical axis contrasting with the projecting volumes of the curves and counter-curves. Very fine deep brown patina, crumbly in the hollows. A Carbon 14 test indicates that the wood dates to between 1660 and 1890.
