Catalogue Note

A neck-rest, Geelvink Bay (Teluk Cenderawasih), Irian Jaya

The iconography – two leaning korvar figures – indicates that this neck-rest was probably used by an important clan member. The complex design of the open-work and champlevé motifs testifies to the strong Indonesian influence found in the art of the Geelvink Bay. The design is enhanced by the areas of kaolin in the troughs and hollows of the carving.
