Catalogue Note
The sculpture depicted in the present work is a version of La Cariatide tombée portant la pierre by Auguste Rodin. It was owned by Stevens and was exhibited at the Cercle Artistique & Littéraire de Bruxelles, Salon d'Eté, July 1924, no. 146.
La Cariatide tombée portant la pierre was first conceived by Rodin circa 1881 as one of the figures of his monumental Gates of Hell, occupying the top left hand corner as viewed. As with many of Rodin's sculptures on The Gates, La Cariatide was produced in bronze and marble.
The strength of the features of the woman, and the similarity between her profile and the features seen in Rodin's sculpture around this date, 1880-90, prompt the suggestion that she could be Rodin's model Adèle.
