Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1890, Ida Ilsted (1869-1949) was the sister of the painter Peter Ilsted (see lot 101). Ida married Hammershøi on 5 September 1891.

During 1890 Hammershøi executed at least five likenesses of his future wife, four oils and one work on paper. The present work relates most closely to his painting of Ida dressed in a grey cardigan and sporting a hat with a feather (Bramsen no. 86). The related drawing of Ida is in the National Museum, Stockholm.
