Catalogue Note
This four-drawer blockfront chest of drawers originates from New London County, Connecticut, where the influence of Rhode Island practice in cabinetwork is pervasive. It displays a design that is remarkably consistent with the lower case of a Norwich-Colchester blockfront chest-on-chest in a private collection. That chest was included in the exhibition New London County Furniture, 1640-1840 held at the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London, Connecticut in 1974 and illustrated in the accompanying catalogue by Edgar Mayhew and Minor Myers as no. 55 on p. 52. Both pieces exhibit blocking which proceeds vertically straight down through the feet and a skirt profile of a modified form found on other Connecticut work (see Mayhew and Myers, nos. 35, 62 and 64). Part of the George S. Palmer collection and lent to the exhibition by Mrs. J. Reid Johnson, the chest-on-chest was categorized as part of Group Z of New London furniture on the basis on its drawer construction and double beading on the tops of the drawer sides.
