Description

  • Ansel Adams
  • 'monolith, the face of half dome, yosemite, california'
mounted, signed by the photographer in pencil on the mount, his Carmel studio stamp (BMFA 11), titled and dated in an unidentified hand in ink, on the reverse, matted, 1927, printed in the 1970s (400 Photographs, cover and p. 35; Lane collects ion, p. 17; Morgan & Morgan, pl. 8; The Eloquent Light, p. 45; The Early Years, pl. 6; Seeing Straight, p. 44; Photography Rediscovered, p. 156)

Condition

This photograph is in generally excellent condition. The overall tone of the print is characteristic of Adams's printing style in the 1970s, when he typically toned his prints with selenium. There is a pinpoint surface scuff in the upper left quadrant, at the top center edge of the print, which does not break the emulsion. Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane collects ion,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 11 on the reverse of this print: 1973 through 1977.
