Description
- Ansel Adams
- 'winter sunrise, the sierra nevada, from lone pine'
mounted, signed by the photographer in pencil on the mount, his Carmel studio stamp (BMFA 11), titled in an unidentified hand in ink on the reverse, matted, 1944, printed in the 1970s (The Eloquent Light exhibition catalogue, unpaginated; Morgan & Morgan, pl. 77; This Is the American Earth, pp. ii-iii; Ansel Adams at 100, pl. 85; Classic Images, pl. 38; Examples, p. 162; Yosemite and the Range of Light, pl. 99; Autobiography, p. 262; 400 Photographs, p. 245)
Condition
This photograph is in generally excellent condition. In raking light the following are visible: tiny circular areas of originally retouching in the lower right quadrant, and in the center of the print, just above the mountain line; and a very faint soft crease in the center of the print, which was present in the print prior to mounting or occurred during the mounting process.
On the mount, there is sunning at the periphery of the image. Additionally, there is double-stick tape, brown paper tape, and linen tape along the top edge of the mount.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane collects
ion,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 11 on the reverse of this print: 1973 through 1977.
