Catalogue Note

The Tathagata Amoghasiddhi, Buddha of the North "Almighty Conqueror" is identified by his right hand gesture of fearlessness and protection, abhaya mudra. The Buddha is said to protect practitioners from the poison of jealousy and envy. This fine sculpture embodies the principal Buddhist tenet of Compassion with its serene otherworldly expression. The sculptural traditions of medieval Pala India can be discerned in the copper and silver inlaid jewelry, and the bifurcated ends of the crown ties and the thin scarf fluttering at the shoulder.
