Catalogue Note
The former owner of this cane, Dr. Arthur von Rosthorn, was a noted Sinologist and diplomat, serving as Austro-Hungarian Chief of Mission to China. A survivor of the Boxer Rebellion, von Rosthorn was one of the few Westerners to fathom the depths of resentment within the Chinese people at the turn of the 20th century, resulting from their treatment at the hands of the Western powers. His interest in China and its culture even extended to the horticultural realm: one of his discoveries, Camillia Rosthorniana, was named in his honor.
