Catalogue Note
The form of stretcher in the present example is derived from the construction vocabulary of bamboo furniture, where bamboo is cut and bent around legs and supports. Compare a zitan painting table of similar form, illustrated in The Chuang Family Bequest of Fine Ming and Qing Furniture in the Shanghai Museum, Hong Kong, 1998, no. 30, pp. 78-79. Compare also a table with similar stretcher sold at Christie's New York, 18th September 2003, lot 19.
