Catalogue Note

Enameled bowls of this form and decoration are unusual and no other similar example appears to be recorded. The decoration found on the bowls is reminiscent of porcelain medallion bowls finely painted in the famille-rose palette, although Qianlong period medallion bowls are rare and more common are those made later, during the Jiaqing and Daoguang reigns. See a Jiaqing famille-rose bowl decorated with related medallions over a powder-blue ground illustrated in Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration: The Complete collects ion of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 183.

Compare also the decoration found on a Qianlong mark and period painted enamel box, from the Qing Court collects ion, included in Metal-bodied Enamel Ware: The Complete collects ion of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 210.
