Estimate
7,000 - 9,000 USD
bidding is closed
Description
the energetically portrayed Kuixing adorned in armor and wrapped in a cloud of swirling flames, raising a writing brush with his right hand and holding an ingot to his chest in his left, his crowned head turned toward the left shoulder, the left foot kicked backwards and supporting a trapezoidal weight, the other leg standing on the head of his vehicle ao (a mythical dragon-fish), the beast writhing in rippling waves, all atop a craggy base with a reticulated facade, lacquered bronze with traces of gilding
Condition
In good overall condition with solid traces of gilding among the lacquer. The writing brush is held firmly within his hand, but is movable. It appears the top of the weight is missing a small item as there is a shallow hole. The tail of the ao was broken and repaired, visible via black lacquer and lumpiness. One of the pointy wings of the ao restuck. The figure was later reinforced onto the ao head by a nut and bold, visible on the underside.

Catalogue Note
Kuixing is an acolyte of Wenchang, the God of Literature. His attributes, the writing brush and ingot, form a rebus for wishing one success in passing the civil service examinations. The weight is used to measure the worth of scholars. His vehicle, the ao (a carp metamorphosing into a dragon as it leaps a final waterfall in its journey upstream) is a symbol of high literary achievement: the scholar passing his examinations.
