Description

the rectangular ivory panel with reticulated ivory border of quatrefoil pattern, carved in relief, depicting a lady, a scholar and an attendant in a pavilion, set against pauwlonia and pine trees with craggy mountains and a crescent moon, the reverse depicting a still-life with a basket of melon, an archaic bell, and rockwork with pinks within a zun vessel atop a stool, accentuated with red, green and blue pigment, the boxwood frame carved with lotus scrolls, all fitted into a boxwood stand flanked by Buddhist lions, a lower section carved with figures and landscapes to both sides, above scrolling aprons, four openwork qilong brackets atop the feet (2)

Condition

The ivory panel is in good condition with expected age cracks. The reticulated border has many reglued areas with small sections missing. The ivory appears to have shrunk in this section, also expected with the fragility and age. The boxwood frame has small nicks and chips around the edges. The aprons move slightly within the fitted grooves. There is a small reglued semi-circular piece at the bottom of the apron -- it was originally a knot in the wood, and therefore weak in first place. The stand is contemporary to the screen.
