Catalogue Note

Lavishly decorated full-tip cups of this type were generally produced from the 19th century onwards, mainly in Canton where they were fashionable and in high demand, especially from Western collects ors and buyers. The largest possible horns were selected and carved in an extravagant fashion, as seen on the present cup.

For related examples see a cup on loan to the Durham University Oriental Museum, illustrated in Jan Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, London, 1999, pl. 38; and two deeply carved full-tip cups recently sold in our London rooms, 7th November 2007, lots 204 and 205.
