Catalogue Note
The form of the present work is based on elaborate zitan throne screens and table screens of the Qianlong period. A full-scale version of this type, inlaid and lacquered with Immortals in landscapes, the crest carved and inlaid with jade dragons, was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 3rd May 1994, lot 313. A cloisonné and gilt-bronze-mounted zitan table screen of similar form, attributed to the Qianlong period, was sold in our London rooms, 8th June 1995, lot 38, and again at Christie's Hong Kong, 28th April 1996, lot 16. Another 18th century screen of similar canted form, with a crest of carved scrolling clouds embellished with bats, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30th May 2005, lot 1282.
The inscriptions on the back of the screen panels each correspond to the scenery depicted on the front. They can be translated as: 'on the lakeside, the landscape is beautiful,' 'there are white and red lotuses in the lake,' 'young ladies are playing by the lake; their beauty is as impressive as the flowers,' 'water birds are chirping and frolicking in the water,' and 'what a wonderful summer season here!'
