Catalogue Note
The shape and decoration of this vessel are derived from the archaic bronze ritual vessel known as fangyi, or 'rectangular-section' vessel, from the Shang or early Western Zhou dynasties.
See a related white jade fangyi with a Qianlong mark and of the period, with a single broad decorative band below the lip, and three raised lines decorating the lid and above the foot in the British Museum, London, illustrated in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade: from the the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, cat.no. 29:12.
