Catalogue Note

According to Rose Kerr in Chinese Ceramics: Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911, Chicago, 1998, the yellow palette used for porcelains was "enlarged to include an opaque, brilliant lemon tone produced by using a lead-antimony enamel also containing zinc. For the same reasons as for the bright lime green, this startling color was not manufactured for long."

This cup is unusually small. Compare to larger examples illustrated in Kerr, ibid., pl. 69; The Tsui Museum of Art, Chinese Ceramics IV, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 31; and The Complete collects ion of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Monochrome Porcelain, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 53. Another larger cup was sold at Christie's New York, 29th March 2006, lot 469.
