the gently rounded sides with everted rim, supported on a short tapering foot, the polished interior decorated with five evenly spaced roundels, each enclosing two butterflies of varying types with finely painted details, amid delicate floral sprays, the reverse applied with a mottled rose-pink enamel

The interior has been polished to remove the original decoration (visible in the ghosting). The fine enamelling was then added in the Republican Period. There are a few dirty pinholes and minute glaze pulls on the interior. The overall condition is still very good.

Catalogue Note
It is interesting to note that there are traces of ghosting to the interior of the present dish, due to the fact that the original enameling to the interior appears to have been polished down and later re-enameled, most likely during the Republican period. Compare, for example, Yongzheng mark and period ruby-back dishes enameled to the interior with the more typical floral motif, such as one from the T.Y. Chao collects ion, formerly in the Charles Russell and Barbara Hutton collects ions, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 18th November 1986, lot 135.
