Catalogue Note

In this candlelit scene of domestic bliss a young mother rocks her newborn to sleep, the elder siblings looking on adoringly. For his subjects Meyer von Bremen drew almost without exception on the everyday life of humble, honest, God-fearing people.

As in the paintings of his contemporaries Knaus, Schlesinger and Defregger his naturalistic style is tempered by a sent.mes ntal and idealised view of rural life, his protagonists shown as proud, happy, and oblivious to hardship.
