Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Thynne accollĂ© with Bentinck for Thomas, Viscount Weymouth, later 1st Marquess of Bath, K.G. and his wife Lady Elizabeth Cavendish-Bentinck, eldest daughter of William, 2nd Duke of Portland, whom he married in 1759.

A quantitity of silver by Pierre Platel, including most of a toilet service of 1701-2, was supplied to the Bentinck familiy, Dukes of Portland (see E. Alfred Jones, Catalogue of Plate Belonging to the Duke of Portland, K.G., G.C.V.O. at Welbeck Abbey). It is possible that the present jars were supplied for the marriage by the bride's family.

A pair of silver-gilt covered bowls with comparable strapwork by Platel from the Donald S. Morrison collects ion were sold Replica Shoes 's, New York, 6 June 1980, lot 49.
