- height 7 5/8in. (19.4cm)
the flared cylindrical bowl engraved with flowerheads and foliage within strapwork, raised on knopped stem and stepped spreading foot with strapwork band, the cover similarly engraved and with reel-shaped finial, marked on base and cover
Condition
edges of finial could use a little straghtening, cover with three splits, two of which have been repaird, tiny lead solder repair where stem joins foot; a little overall wear, otherwise good condition

A 1571 silver-gilt-mounted tigerware jug bearing the same maker's mark was sold Christie's, New York, 14 April 2005, lot 265. The engraved design and tooling on the neck of this jug are very similar to that of the present lot.
A large and fine cup and cover by this maker, dated 1569-1570, was given to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, by Archbishop Matthew Parker (1504-1575). Although the Matthew Parker cup is far more elaborate than the present lot, it displays conforming engraved foliage (illus. Glanville, Silver in Tudor and Early Stuart England, fig. 115),
