Catalogue Note

Raffaëlli's "muse" was the chiffonier or ragpicker.  Nocturnal scavengers of the night, these vagabonds scoured the streets of Paris in search of discarded items such as rags, bones, paper or tin cans.  They often carried a lantern, hooked stick, shovel and wicker basket (the present lot) or burlap bag (lot 117) to collects their "spoils", which they would then sell in the morning.  While these types represented the under-belly of French society, Raffaëlli never showed them as less than stoic, proud individuals.
