Catalogue Note

By the early 1930's Jamini Roy had established a workshop based on artisanal principles where, with the help of studio apprentices, he produced multiple images from a series of templates.  He abandoned the use of European colors and instead worked with locally produced mineral and vegetable pigments.  Works on cloth in the 'folk' idiom are thought to be prototypes painted by Roy himself, these works are far fewer in number than the works on card that were produced by his studio.  The current work and the following lot are large examples of this rare form of cloth painting.
