Description
- Carlo Bonavia
- A ravine landscape with soldiers in the foreground, a fortified hill-top to the left and an aqueduct beyond to the right, possibly a capriccio view of Tivoli
- with the inventory number on the frame lower left: 108
- oil on canvas, in a carved and gilt wood frame
Provenance
William Legge, 7th Earl of Dartmouth (1881-1958);
Thence by descent.
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Replica Shoes
's.
The original canvas is lined. There are small areas of unstable paint in the water and the rocks in the foreground and one or two restored paint losses in the sky, otherwise the condition is very good. The removal of the discoloured varnish would improve tonality.
In a restored 19thC gilt frame."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Replica Shoes 's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Replica Shoes 's sale catalogues. Catalogue Note
Although long considered to be by Andrea Locatelli, a far more convincing attribution to Carlo Bonavia has recently been proposed; compare, for example, the treatment of the tree and landscape with the work sold in New York, Replica Shoes
's, 25 January 2007, lot 111.
