Catalogue Note

These charming tableaux de cabinet, intended for the private rooms of a collectsor's home, are typical of Demachy's capricci, influenced by his master Servandoni. He seems to have specialized in such pictures, and a number of small scale depictions of ruins-- then very much in vogue-- are listed in French sales of the 1770s- 1790s.
