Catalogue Note

Lazarus van der Borcht was a landscape painter working in the Mannerist style that ultimately derived from Gillis van Coninxloo and, through him, Anton Mirou.  Here he sets the scene of the Nativity in a sweeping landscape, and enlivens the composition with the colorful additions of the chickens on the stable roof and the stork in the sky above.

An attribution to Maerten Ryckaert has also been suggested for this painting.
