Catalogue Note

The present work would most likely date to the 1630s, relatively early in Teniers' career.  It was during the early part of this decade that the young artist became influenced by the work of Adriaen Brouwer, who had just recently moved to Antwerp and had began to paint genre scenes of tavern subjects or other everyday themes in a restrained, almost monchromatic palette.
