This collection of works highlights the historic encounter of Rabindranath Tagore and Leonard Elmhirst of Dartington Hall. Modeled on Rabindranath’s Santiniketan, Dartington Hall fostered an important artistic community and drew visionary thinkers and artists from around the world to its beautiful estate.

The rich artistic heritage of Pakistan is explored through the opening lots of the auction. Spanning from 1951 to 2022, these works highlight the craftsmanship and powerful message of key figures within Pakistani art. The selection begins with an early figurative work by pioneering artist Anwar Jalal Shemza through to an emotive diptych by leading contemporary artist Imran Qureshi.

The sale of his landmark painting Bulls from 1961 ignited the market, and this season we are honoured to be offering an array of works, from watercolours in his sketchbook to canvases of his most enduring themes: the woman and the horse. These lots are testament to the depth and breadth of Husain’s inimitable craft.

The upcoming Modern &amp; Contemporary South Asian auction features trailblazers of the region: creators who questioned convention and pioneered their own visual languages. The sale is led by a seminal work by Manjit Bawa from 1995 and a rare, early painting by Bhupen Khakhar, titled People at Mosque. An important single owner sequence from the Dartington Hall Trust comprises a masterwork by polymath Rabindranath Tagore and fresh-to-market works of the Bengal School.
