A Gentle Summer Breeze in Zhang Daqian's 'Lotus in the Wind'

L otus is a recurring theme in Zhang Daqian's oeuvre, as it is one of the artist’s favorite flowers. Painted in 1973 at the eve of an important solo exhibition of the artist, Lotus in the Wind stands as an outstanding demonstration of both Zhang's mastery of skills and the creative energy of the later stage of his artistic career.

While the artist usually painted in a vertical format, Lotus in the Wind extends across an exceptionally large piece of horizontal paper that spans more than two meters in width. Taking advantage of a format similar to a handscroll, the work offers a spectacular panoramic view of a summer lotus pond.
