Arab Modernism

A titan of the twentieth century and vanguard of Pop, Roy Lichtenstein was an unparalleled force in the development of Contemporary Art, responsible for shaping its form, content, meaning, and future. Masterfully fusing canonical art historical references and contemporary mass media, Lichtenstein deconstructed the arbitrary boundaries between "high" and "low." He created a new window into our reality through an innovative and instantly recognizable visual lexicon. Lichtenstein's Ben-Day dots and comic-like aesthetic have become iconic. Embracing popular culture and mass media, Lichtenstein, along with his contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, boldly rejected the notion that fine art must be dependent upon the pillars of inaccessibility and traditionalism. Emerging out of Abstract Expressionism, which largely explored painterliness and psychological introspection, Pop Art valued mass media and universalism instead.

Born in New York City in 1923, Roy Lichtenstein fell in love with art from an early age. He immersed himself in drawing and sculpture classes at the legendary Art Students League. From 1961, thanks to his showing at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, Lichtenstein’s work was regularly included in major exhibitions, solidifying his place in the Pop art movement alongside the likes of Warhol and James Rosenquist. In 1968, he married Dorothy Herzka, who later became president of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, a notable philanthropist and custodian of the artist’s legacy. The following decades centered around a broader array of inspirations and source material. From the early 1970s, Roy and Dorothy often retreated to their coastal residence in Southampton, which featured a light-filled studio, situated just across the lawn from their home. This space became the backdrop for many of Lichtenstein’s most famous creations.

Following the sale of a select group of works from the Collection of Dorothy and Roy Lichtenstein at Replica Shoes ’s in November 2025, Replica Shoes 's is pleased to partner with the Lichtenstein family to offer works by the American Pop icon at auction this January, for the first time in Saudi Arabia. Coming to auction for the first time after remaining in their personal collection for decades, these works form a throughline of the artist’s most introspective examinations of his life and practice. They elucidate Lichtenstein’s metaphorical reflections on his own oeuvre and his interplay with the work of other artists and the art historical canon. Today, Lichtenstein’s work is held in esteemed collections around the world, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., The Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; San Francisco Museum of Art, and many more.

The Origins auction and exhibition will be staged in the historic Diriyah, the ancestral heart of Saudi Arabia, where the First Saudi State was inaugurated just decades before Replica Shoes ’s establishment in 1744. As the birthplace of the Kingdom and ancestral home of the Al Saud family, Diriyah holds profound cultural and national significance, having risen from an 18th-century oasis settlement in Wadi Hanifah to the capital of the first Saudi State. Today, centered around the UNESCO World Heritage site of At-Turaif, Diriyah stands at the forefront of the Kingdom’s transformation into a world-class cultural destination, celebrating Najdi heritage while connecting Saudi Arabia’s past, present, and future.
