E mbracing 5000 years of Asian art history, this sale will encompass a diverse range of paintings, sculptures and works of art from China, Vietnam, India and the Himalayas. Several groups of early Qing dynasty porcelains from private European collects ions, selections of archaic and later Chinese bronze vessels, paintings and Buddhist statuary, but also an interesting German private collects ion of ceramics for the Vietnamese court further lead this fascinating journey through Asia.
The sale features an interesting collects ion of ceramics and Jades its German owner formed when he was leaving and working in Vietnam between 1958 and 1975. Beside a few examples of 'Bleu de Huê' ceramics China supplied to the Nguyen court during the 19th century, the collects ion includes an historical blue ground and gold enamel part dinner service commissioned for the Khai Dinh Emperor (1916-1925) to the Manufacture de Sèvres in 1923, emblazoned with the name of the Emperor (Lot 211).
An English private collects ion of archaic bronze vessels from the Warring states and Han dynasty and further archaic bronzes from Austrian and French collects ions provide an interesting focus for the sale.
The sale also features a great diversity of Buddhist art from all countries of Asia, including nice examples of gilt-bronze figures, wood and blanc de Chine statues from China. Other highlights include a rare 16th-17th century copper-alloy triad of Indra from Nepal, a 10th-11th century Indian stone throne and a 10th century Sri Lankan Buddha, the latter two from the collects ion of the late John Barnett, or two extremely rare pottery models of ca. 10th century Stupas from Vietnam.
The sale include a few classic examples of Qing dynasty ceramics from several European private collects ions.
Finally several works in the sale well exemplify the rich cultural and iconographic exchanges in the decorative arts between China and Europe during the Qing dynasty..
