Gorham's cheerleader for the Art Nouveau style was designer William Christmas Codman, who was hired from England by the company in 1891. Many of his Art Nouveau designs were developed for the Martelé line, introduced in 1897 as a luxury product, with all of the forms being both raised and decorated by hand. The style was also used on pieces which were partially machine-formed, as here, but still used Gorham's exceptional group of hand-chasers to create the flowing decoration.
