Collection of Maude B. Feld, New York;

Thence by descent to Alan W. Feld and Suzanne C. Feld, 1995.

This scene is after a steel engraving drawn by Thomas Allom and engraved by J. C. Bentley in 1843 entitled Lake See-Hoo and Temple of the Thundering Winds, from the Vale of Tombs. Lake See-Hoo (Xihu) is a freshwater lake in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province in eastern China, which is divided into five sections by three causeways. There are numerous temples, pagodas, gardens, and artificial islands within the lake, which has influenced poets and painters throughout China's history and has served as one of the most important sources of inspiration for Chinese garden designers. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011.
