the figure standing with the proper right hand on the belt, the face set with arched brows, large almond eyes, and a closely cropped, finely delineated beard, outfitted in a belted robe with prominent lapels and side slits, the back of the belt with a large tab or pouch, raised on an integral rectangular base, modern stand, Japanese wood box (5)

Loo & Co., Exhibition of Chinese Arts, New York, 1941, cat. no. 192; subsequently illustrated in Hugo Munsterberg, Sculpture of the Orient, New York, 1972, pl. 91; and in the exhibition Ancient Chinese bronze vessels, gilt bronzes and sculptures; two private collections, one formerly part of the Minkenhof collection, Eskenazi, London, 1977, cat. no. 18 where the figure is described as Western Asiatic, possibly modeled after a Tocharian or Khorezmian.
