Famously, the 12th Duke Hamilton who was close to financial ruin, won the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree in 1867 with his horse Cortolvin. In addition to substantial prize money, the Duke also took some £16,000 from the bookmakers, restoring his fortune substantially.
