Description

elegantly potted with a compressed globular body, rising from a tall tapered foot pierced with two slots, surmounted by a cylindrical neck, covered overall with a celadon-beige glaze, the glaze suffused with a dense network of crackles, the footring unglazed revealing the buff-coloured body, Japanese wood box

17.5 cm

Hirano Kotoken.

This vase boasts an elegant shape, and no complete Southern Song guan counterparts of such chuandai ping (vase with two apertures on the foot) appear to be known. Compare two guan long-necked vases with beige glazes, likely from the same kiln, illustrated in Nezu Museum, Nan So no Seiji Sora wo Utsusu Utsuwa / Heavenly Blue: Southern Song Celadons, Tokyo, 2010, pls 58 and 59. The Longquan kiln was also deeply influenced by this type of guan ware, compare a Longquan celadon chuandai ping in the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelains of the Two Song Dynasties, Hong Kong, 1996, vol. II, no. 99.

When compared with kiln site excavated shards, the body and glaze of the present lot bear a closer resemblance to those unearthed from Jiaotanxia site, similar to a set of shards collected from this kiln site as detailed in ibid, Tokyo, nos 82-2, 8, 9, 15.
