Chugoku Toji Meihin Ten Ise Korekushon no Shiho / Masterpieces of Chinese Ceramic Art Exhibition, Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, Ishikawa, 2012, cat. no. 110.

Shika Meisai: Ise Korekushon no Meito / Imperial Colors: Peerless Chinese Porcelains from the Ise Collection, Gotoh Museum, Tokyo, 2015, cat. no. 59.

The design of underglaze-incised dragon motifs on aubergine-glazed bowls was already standardized during the Kangxi reign (1662-1722), serving as the prototype for subsequent Qing dynasty productions, with variations primarily seen in the rendering of the dragon motifs. Comparable examples include: one in the Shanghai Museum collection, illustrated in Kangxi Porcelains from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1998, pl. 224; another from the Tianminlou Collection, published in Chinese Porcelain: The S.C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, Hong Kong, 1987, vol. 1, pl. 144; and a third example from the Ringling Museum of Art collection, included in the exhibition Chinese Ceramics: The Koger Collection, Sarasota, 1985, cat. no. 172 - the accompanying catalogue noting that this vibrant purple glaze represents a late Kangxi innovation. The present lot, however, constitutes an exceptionally rare matched pair from the Qianlong period (1736-1795).
