The high chest was originally made about 1750 for John Reynell (1708-1784) who married Mary Coates (1707-1773) in 1735. They adopted Mary’s nephew Samuel Coates (1748–1830) in 1748 when his father died. Samuel married Lydia Saunders (1749-1789) in 1775. After Lydia’s death he married Amy Hornor (1765–1838) in 1791. It appears that the high chest then descended to Samuel’s second son (with Lydia Saunders), Joseph Saunders Coates (1783-1835). Upon Joseph's death it went to Samuel's fourth son (with Amy Hornor), Dr. Benjamin Hornor Coates (1797-1881). Dr. Coates did not marry and had no children. Therefore upon Dr. Coates' death, George Morrison Coates (1817-1893), Dr. Coates' second cousin, oversaw the public sale of his estate at M. Thomas & Sons, Auctioneers at 139-141 South Fourth Street on March 2, 1882. It appears it was purchased by Dr. Coates’ nephew, Joseph Hartshorne Coates (b. 1812 Philadelphia, PA – d. 1889 Goshen, New York) (Joseph Saunders Coates' son). It then descended to his son, Joseph Saunders Coates (1859-1951) and then to his daughter Janet Wisner Coates (1896-1968).
