Description
the complete set of twelve woodblock prints, shunga, with hand-applied colour, embellished with white mica grounds, plus colophon (three sheets), unsigned, and comprising:
- A mother with her young son
- Two lovers meet in a secluded outdoor spot
- A widow entwined with her young lover; a box of intimate objects rests nearby
- A passionate matron swoons in her young lover’s embrace
- A wife instructs her husband in pleasuring her
- A clownish bathhouse attendant (sansuke) corners a young woman; he keeps his coin tucked in his ear
- A commoner couple makes love on a warm summer night beneath a mosquito net
- A young man enjoys a rare encounter with his courtesan lover
- With her husband away, a wife entertains her lover in her bedroom
- A female abalone diver evades her fisherman lover’s questioning amid rumors of infidelity
- A commoner wife calls in her lover during her husband’s absence
- A man suckles his pregnant wife, indicated by the sash around her belly

This renowned set of shunga is from the 1830s edition, featuring mica backgrounds and hand colouring. The first edition was published as The Adonis Plant (Fukujuso) and included text that is largely omitted in this deluxe version.
