Description

Property of a New York Private Collector

A GERMAN SILVER SPICE TOWER, LATE 18TH - EARLY 19TH CENTURY

modelled as a castle tower, the spire with flag finial and scalework evoking tiles, the incised rectangular body with gallery top and pierced windows above a door, the interior with runners for a drawer, now missing, paneled stem with circular pedestal partly chased with scalework, quatrefoils, above a square platform

bearing marks for Augsburg 1803, with alterations

height 12 3/4 in.

32.4 cm

A comparable spice tower is in the Stieglitz Collection at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. See Chaya Benjamin, The Stieglitz Collection Masterpieces of Jewish Art, p. 108-109. In the catalogue, the spice tower is dated 1757-59 but its Neoclassical style makes it more likely to be dated 1802-3.
