One of several bindings made for Marcantonio Totila in the Bibliotheca Brookeriana (for more details of Totila, see part I, 11 October 2023, lot 60). His bindings were made by different workshops; this binding is attributed to the Pflug and Ebeleben binder. A similar binding made for Totila, though without the painted interlacing, is illustrated in A. Hobson and L. Quaquarelli, Legature bolognesi del Rinascimento, plate 43. Hobson also made a census of bindings made for Totila; the present volume was not known to him and has been added as number 10 in the census (A. Hobson, "Bookbinding in Bologna", Schede umanistiche 1 (1998), pp. 147-176).
