Full red morocco, covers ruled in gilt, spine with raised bands in six compartments, second, third, and fourth gilt-lettered, edges gilt, The Gathering Storm and Their Finest Hour inscribed by Churchill on the front free endpapers. Housed in custom slipcase. [With:] Typed letter signed ("Winston Churchill") as Leader of the Opposition, to Viscount Trafalgar. One page (241 x 190 mm) on Chartwell stationery, written from Westerham, Kent, and dated 9 September 1949, with manuscript post script in blue in, and in original envelope; old folds, minor smudging.
A set of the first English edition, presentation copy from Churchill to Viscount Trafalgar, accompanied by a typed letter signed
"My dear Lord Trafalgar, On coming home I find your welcome gift, and Mrs. Churchill has shown me your charming letter... This souvenir of Vittoria and its family connection make King Joseph's dish a trophy which will always be cherished... I hope you will allow me to send you, as a very small expression of my thanks, the two volumes of my war history which have so far been published..."
