Little is known about Bernardino Zaganelli’s life, but he likely trained in Forlì before returning to his hometown of Cotignola, near Ravenna, where he shared a workshop with his brother Francesco. The two often collaborated—their earliest known painting, Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Florian was executed in 1499 for the Church of San Francesco, Cotignola, and is now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Brera, Milan—and produced independent works, like the present painting.
