With her Turkish headdress and exotic costume, this type of sitter has come to represent a fantasy image of an Eastern woman viewed through Westerners' eyes. The rose she holds between her breasts may be a play on words identifying her as La Rossa or Roxelana, the favourite wife of the Ottoman Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent (r.1520-66)
