S. Mouquin, Pierre IV Migeon 1696-1758, Paris, 2001, p. 70 ill.
The decorative effects achieved through the use of veneer are fully in keeping with Pierre IV Migeon's highly personal stylistic language. A cabinetmaker specialising primarily in the art of veneering, and to a lesser extent in marquetry, he is distinguished by his great ornamental restraint, which is also evident in our two-piece cabinet, whose harmony is undisturbed. The geometric veneers subtly exploit the natural tones of the wood and highlight the intrinsic quality of the material. We find certain elements that are characteristic of his work: multi-lobed reserves, the independence of the structure in relation to a sober and elegant abstract decoration, and his pronounced taste for highlighting the beauty of the material. This refined aesthetic is characteristic of his early work at the beginning of the reign of Louis XV, during which he was awarded the title of master craftsman in 1735.
The vigour and solidity of the structure can also be compared to another cabinet attributed to the same cabinetmaker (Christie's, Paris, 21 June 2006, lot 197).
