Description

A KIZ-GHIORDES RUG, WEST ANATOLIA

circa 1800 or earlier

with small medallion design

approximately 150 by 112cm; 4ft. 11in., 3ft. 8in.

White ground rugs with small cintamani or 'leopard spot' designs, are recorded as being produced in Selendi, along with their better known 'Bird' rugs, in the 17th century. Schürmann illustrated an earlier version in

Oriental Carpets, London 1968, p. 14. Based on colour and structure this is assigned to the nearby weaving centre of Ghiordes, and a century later.
