The arms, crest and motto are those of Hay.
The inscription on the covers reads Presented as a Tribute of Gratitude by the Underwriters of London and elsewhere interested in the Hon.ble East India Company's Ship Astell, Robert Hay Esquire, Commander, for his most gallant and successful defense of that Valuable Ship in which duty he was severely wounded on the Third day of July 1810 when attacked by a greatly superior French force on his voyage to Calcutta, and from which he nobly extricated his important Charge, through the perils of a most sanguinary and unequal Contest.
