The form of these sauce boats is taken from a set of four with figures of Venus and Adonis, made in 1743-44 by Nicholas Sprimont for Frederick Prince of Wales and still in the Royal Collection (see E. Alfred Jones, The Gold and Silver of Windsor Castle, pl. LI, p. 100, also Arthur Grimwade, Rococo Silver, 1727-1765, pl. 33A).
