Gaspare Diziani started apprenticing in Belluno, his home town, before going to Venice to train with Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734), whose art was a greater influence on him. After a short trip to Munich and Dresden in 1717, Diziani returned to Venice, where he remained for most of his life.

The artist received commissions for frescoes and altarpieces, for which he produced a large number of sketches and drawings. His compositions are characterised by a sure touch and a vigorous brushstroke.

The present painting is an example of the rapid execution and mastery of brush and colour that are characteristic of him. This seems in all likelihood to be a sketch or bozzetto for an altarpiece that so far remains unidentified.

Several drawings by the artist can be compared to the present composition: for example a Virgin Surrounded by Saints and two examples of the Virgin with Sts Joseph, Anthony of Padua and John the Baptist, in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (inv. 13130, 13236 and 13237).
